Worksheets for Kindergarten

Teaching a group of excited and energetic little children can be a very difficult job. Especially if each child has a different set of capabilities and interests. The job of a kindergarten teacher or that of a parent whose child is in kindergarten only keeps getting tougher by the day with a large number of activities like gauging the child’s psychology to teaching them new things slowly and making it look like a game.

The kindergarten system can be divided into two parts, Lower Kindergarten and Upper kindergarten. Children who are two and three years of age come under Lower Kindergarten and the four and five year olds come under Upper Kindergarten. Kindergarten prepares children for elementary education and makes them mature enough to understand what is taught at the elementary school level. Hence, a lot of effort is required to teach them and prepare them for later school life.

The initial years of teaching kindergarten students should be in such a way that the children’s interests in studies remain intact even after kindergarten and they do not lose their ability to learn and understand what is taught later. This is where worksheets and other study aids like activity books play an important role. In this article we will see how worksheets can be used to teach and prepare kindergarten children for elementary education.

One of the main parts of kindergarten teaching is to inculcate in the child basic skills like motor skills, cognition of shapes, sizes and colours, reading and writing skills, basic math and linguistic skills. Using worksheets to do so can help a lot as children pick up things faster than adults. Maths worksheets which have components that children come across in their day to day life can be used to teach them concepts of numbers and colours.

It is important for the child to develop motor skills early in life. This can be done by teaching the kids to draw lines and different shapes. Worksheets can be used for the same. They can also be used to teach the child to write. Worksheets can also be used to teach English. They can help a student to learn to read and write. Letters with pictures of objects whose first letter corresponds to the particular letter in question (“A for Apple, B for Ball”) given in separate columns for matching can help form the concept of the English alphabet. Cursive writing worksheets can be used around the age of five to teach a child to hold a pencil and write.

These days a lot of importance is given to the environment and the awareness around it. Hence, teachers can talk to students and teach them about the environment towards the end of kindergarten education. EVS worksheets can be introduced at the age of five to help students identify trees, animals and other aspects of nature.

Worksheets can be of great help in teaching kindergarten children and preparing them for later academic life. Children learn much more easily with the help of different worksheets. These, if used well can be one of the easiest and fun methods of teaching children in kindergarten.
